I was raised by a fundamentalist Christian mother. I'd read the Bible
in its entirety several times before I was twelve years old (I'm not
claiming that I understood it, but I think that the exposure made me
appreciate the beauty of language). Anyway, imagine my shock when I
discovered that my elderly Catholic neighbor had never seen a
concordance. She didn't, in fact, know what a concordance was, and
didn't seem to care. Her priest would tell her everything that she
needed to know about the Bible.
