The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends
May 27, 2005

Dear Friends,

This week, the University of Idaho ceremonially planted a tree at the U.S.
National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Not just any tree, mind you.
We planted a Gnarly Poplar developed by College of Natural Resources
Professor George Newcombe. This new cultivar resulted from an experiment
designed to improve disease resistance, but the added twist is that the
ornamental poplar becomes more contorted as it ages.

Since the University's land-grant mission includes innovation and knowledge
transfer, the Idaho Research Foundation secured a plant patent from the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office for landscape and ornamental purposes. I want to
thank faculty, staff and alumni, along with Sen. Larry Craig, dean of the
Idaho Congressional delegation, who attended the tree-planting ceremony to
celebrate George's wonderful horticultural achievement. The trip to the East
Coast also provided me with opportunities to attend vibrant alumni chapter
gatherings in Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Next week, I will participate in a forum at Sichuan University in Chengdu,
China, with 35 U.S. and Chinese university presidents. The forum, organized
by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Michael Crow, president of Arizona
State University, will address "University Design in the 21st Century." The
success of the University of Idaho Research Park in Post Falls will be
central to my presentation on the opportunities presented by creating
university high-tech research parks.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

~ UI Professor Janice Fletcher is one of 14 faculty members nationwide who
will be honored as an outstanding academic adviser. A professor of family
and consumer sciences, Fletcher will receive the National Academic Advising
Association's certificate of merit, which honors individuals who have
demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of
students.

~ The Vandal Scholarship Fund's annual Governor's Gala is set for Aug. 2 at
the Boise Centre on the Grove. An elegant dinner will be followed by a
lively auction to benefit VSF and the Ada County Alumni Chapter Scholarship.
Some items up for bid include a trip for two to a Vandal football away game,
a fly fishing adventure for two on the McKenzie River in Oregon and a night
at the Coeur d'Alene Resort with golf and dinner. For more information or to
RSVP, contact the VSF office in Boise at (208) 364-4027.

~ Two scholarships are being established to honor Eric McMillan, a UI
student-athlete and a business management and human resources major, fatally
shot last September. An anonymous donor has made a $25,000 gift to the
Vandal Scholarship Fund to endow a scholarship honoring McMillan. The Eric
McMillan Memorial Athletic Scholarship will be awarded annually to a
student-athlete who is an outstanding student, committed to excellence and
displays high moral character as well as being a member of the Vandal
football team. In addition, English instructor Marcia Kmetz and ethnic
literature professor Jan Johnson have created the Eric McMillan Memorial
Diversity Scholarship in McMillan's memory. They must raise $25,000 to endow
the scholarship and they hope to receive donations of $5 from 5,000 donors.
This scholarship will be targeted toward students who have escaped from
difficult circumstances and who have improved both their own life and the
lives of those around them. Donations to both endowed scholarships can be
made online at www.uidaho.edu/givetoidaho or directed to the UI Foundation,
Gift Administration Office, P.O. Box 443147, Moscow, ID 83844-3147.

Take care, Moscow.

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they
are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say
about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."
