The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends
June 10, 2005
Dear Friends,
I am very pleased that Douglas D. Baker, vice provost for academic affairs
at Washington State University, has accepted the position of University of
Idaho provost and executive vice president. We are delighted to have him
join our leadership team. His depth and breadth of experience and skills,
plus an action-oriented style make him a wonderful fit for the needs of the
University of Idaho. Doug will be a terrific provost and executive vice
president. Please join me in welcoming Doug and his family to the University
of Idaho.
I also want to express my gratitude for the interim leadership of Provost
Linda Morris, who worked tirelessly to move the University of Idaho forward
over the last six months. Linda will return to her position as vice provost
for academic affairs when Doug Baker assumes the provost position Aug. 8.
Tim White
President
Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:
~ An essay written by graduate creative writing student Sean Prentiss has
received honorable mention in the Atlantic Monthly College Writing Awards
Competition. The essay, "Pantheon of Loss," is about the author's
experiences competing as a wrestler in high school and the dangers
associated with the sport. Prentiss, of Bangor, Penn., graduated in May with
a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing.
~ The Fine Arts Community, a living group in the UI residence hall system,
received a national "Of the Month" award from the National Association of
College and University Residence Halls. Students were recognized for their
assistance in recruiting students during the university's largest recruiting
event, Vandal Friday. The Fine Arts Community is a co-ed living group for
students with an interest in art, music, theater and dance.
~ UI student Shingis Madakhmetov will receive a $3,000 Phi Eta Sigma
Scholarship next year to support his undergraduate studies. A sophomore from
Kazakhstan, Madakhmetov is a member of the University Honors Program. He is
pursuing majors in electrical engineering and economics, and is currently a
research intern for the National Institute for Advanced Transportation
Technology. He also completed a research internship for the UI's
Microelectronics Research and Communications Institute. This year,
Madakhmetov served as president of UI's Phi Eta Sigma chapter. He is
president of the Muslim Student Association. During the last 18 years, 19 UI
students have received a Phi Eta Sigma scholarship.
~ A group of graduates from the University of Idaho College of Law's class
of 1971 is expressing a commitment to excellence in legal education in
Idaho, as well as a commitment to the development of future leaders in the
legal profession in Idaho and the Northwest. The group recently established
the Class of 1971 Scholarship at the University of Idaho College of Law.
Contributors to the scholarship include Howard R. Foley, Dwight E. Baker, D.
Blair Clark, David Leroy, James G. Reid, Robert L. Zegelow, Vernon K. Smith,
John F. Croner, Ronald D. Schilling, John F. Varin and Simon S. Martin. This
generous initiative will provide a three-year recruiting scholarship of
$7,000 per year, to be awarded to an outstanding student who enters the
College of Law this fall.

Take care, Moscow.

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they
are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say
about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."
