Tom,

Jesse Jackson once told this story about the press (I paraphrase here):

Jesse and the Pope were out on a boat when a large wind came up and blew
the Pope's hat into the water. Jesse Jackson, wanting to save the
Pope's hat, got out of the boat, walked across the water, retrieved the
hat, and returned to the boat.

The next day the headlines read "Jesse Jackson Can't Swim."

I suggest reading the NY Times article on the tapes.:

It's easy to criticize and there are ample things for which to criticize
the president. I pose this however. For the last 8 years I have spent
20 or 30 Saturday's a year going to our local rehab center talking to
poor souls in the throws of detox. My message to them is simple: the
pain will end and there is hope. Many of these people have returned to
a life where they need no longer spend their days in despair and the
horrible anguish of addiction. Those lucky few - less than 15% - who
find sobriety for an extended period are my personal heroes.

Of all things that one can say about Bush's failings, this is not one of
them. In fact, it may be one of his most redeeming virtues. Unless you
have walked that road, I caution you.

Give credit where credit is due, that is, unless you can't because you
are blinded by hate.
