Dear Ron, B.J. and Visionaries,

I thought you might find this story somewhat diverting, in light of the
Homeland Security discussion.

Back in the year zero, or around 1967, when I was beginning my philosophy of
science graduate studies in London at Bedford College and the London School
of Economics, my great mentor professor from Reed College where I did my
undergraduate work, Lloyd Reynolds, calligrapher laureate of Oregon, Zen
master, and all-around superior human being, asked me if I would do him a
favor and deliver something to his good friend, the famed type designer and
book designer for Faber and Faber, Bertholde Wolpe.

If Professor Reynolds had asked me to take a header off Theophilus Tower in
the rain, I would have asked if he would like to see a double back flip on
the way down. Yes was my instant answer for the delivery gig.

Mr. Wolpe was a collector of printed ephemera... all things interesting
involving type, printing and related materials from train tickets to
placards to greeting cards and beyond.

Professor Reynolds presented me with the gift for Berthold: a branding iron.
With that branding iron in tow, I was off to London on the airplane with my
special, valuable and unique carry-on, the branding iron, explaining my way
through customs with some glee.

I noticed on the list Ron Force provided that 'branding iron' does not
appear. I wonder...

All the best for a wonderful 2006 and thank you for jogging the memory links
to a very pleasant time and two giants of my creative life,

Linda Pall
