I would agree that we need as much diversity of choice in our educational
system as possible with a couple of caveats.
First, the science, math, and English requirements must be kept high. It is
virtually impossible to survive in today's society without a good founding in
all three areas, whether your goals are arts, fine arts, social studies,
mathematics, hard science, engineering or any of the combinant offshoots that
are showing up.
Second, we need a hard counter to the increasingly mystical, irrational and
illogical bent that our country is taking. History shows that societies which
vary far from the pragmatic are doomed to failure. Dogmatism cannot survive
against knowledge for very long because reality always intrudes.
With those bedrock requirements set I am in favor of as much variety as
possible. But when we start talking about letting folks avoid the basics we are
limiting their future choices and if they change their minds later about what
they want to do (as many will) we will have done them a disservice that may
not be correctable. Remember, college graduates out earn all others by a very
substantial margin, thousands and thousands of dollars.

you win." Mahatma Gandhi
