I was a WSU student at that time.  I was asleep and woke up to total darkness at about 3:00 p.m. and people gathering out in the hall.  I didn't believe them when they told me what had happened.  WSU classes were cancelled (for just one day, I think).  People wandered around for at least a week wearing filter masks.  Although I had never had sinus problems prior to the eruption, I have had a chronic sinus problem ever since.  WSU students were given the option of taking the grades we currently had and leaving early if we felt that the ash was hazardous to our health.  I remember having saved a small vial of the ash but lost track of it years ago.
