I have repaired my own. Often the problem is with the little plastic linkage
that operate the tape transport. Open the bottom and see if there is a
rubber band that is broken or slipped off the 'gears' (really more like
pulleys). If it slipped off, it can be replaced but it may be stretched or
worn and will probably come off again soon. You might be able to locate a
replacement somewhere, but it can't be any old rubber band of coure. Another
thing that can happen is that the entire large 'pulley' end retainer cap can
pop off, preventing the proper rotation of the drive wheel. You might be
able to resecure that too. If your unit shows a lot of wear in those same
parts, it is best to throw it away. If your unit has dirty heads, they can
be cleaned, but don't try this yourself with anything other than commercial
cleaning tapes. A single microscopic scratch on the heads will damage them
and your tapes. If your unit won't light up, it is most likely the power
supply or the voltage regulator. The power supplies are often the most
expensive part of the device, and although the voltage regulator is only
about $1.79, you have to know how to modify the circuit boards to replace
these, and need test equipment to verify that these are at fault.

Does anybody know of any VCR repair shops in this area? We now have 2 VCR's
that are not working and we don't know where to take them, or if it's even
worth it to spend the money on repair. I know some time ago Moscow had
Darold's TV and VCR repair in town, but I believe they are out of business
now.

If anybody has info, please let me know offlist.

Thanks!!

Tami Stinebaugh (who does own a DVD player, but it's not much help with my
kids' favorite Disney movies;)
