Tom,
You are not far from the truth!
The Moscow Chamber of Commerce failed for awhile to pay to the State of Idaho
the state income tax withheld from employee compensation. These taxes were then
paid after the state threatened certain action.
The result: $578.87 in penalties and interest FYE 2004 -- part of that money
came from our pockets through public entities.
The excuse: the check(s) was lost in a drawer. Yeah, right. Despite this and
many other worse cock-ups, pretty boy director Paul Kimmell continues to enjoy
the fawning favor of most of the chamber board. Given the size and nature of
the "errors" perhaps Kimmell belongs in that institution that was the
inspiration for your posting

[Stay tuned for more information on the egregious errors found in the chamber
books and the resulting financial problems. If these funds were from purely
private sources, most in the community would not care. But these funds come in
part (generally in excess of $20,000 per year) from public sources -- Moscow
School District, UI, City of Moscow, State of Idaho, etc. So far, none of these
public, tax supported organizations have taken the proper action compelled by
their statutory fiduciary duties. I hope this changes before the aftermath of
such failure bring serious, long term consequences to these agencies.]

This money may not accumulate much interest, but you must admit that it is
safer than the Moscow Chamber of Commerce's budget.
