Families, Singles, Adults, Children, Believers, Non-Believers, Etc.
In round figures:
Estimated cost of the war in Iraq:
$300,000,000,000 (300 billion).
Approximate population of the United States:
300,000,000 (300 million)
Financial cost of the war in Iraq for each person in the United States: $1,000.
Of course, the over-riding cost of war is in the very real occurrences of
deaths, children/adults crippled/mutilated/burned, other horrendous injuries,
lives shattered, families ripped asunder, pets lost, opportunities for
interaction with loved ones forever gone, lifelong trauma/fear, trust/confidence
lost, infrastructure/personal possessions/ treasures destroyed, etc.
The following questions, though trivial in light of the human/animal sufferings
and destruction wrought by the war, are still of some concern:
What have each of us received for our $1,000 contribution?
How are we better off?
On balance, how is humankind better off?
Are we closer or further away from world peace and stability?
Are we more or less secure in our own country?
Is it possible that for a fraction of $300,000,000,000 Saddam Hussein could have
been toppled?
Can you think of ways in which your $1,000 could have been spent to make the
world a better place for all?
Etc.
How do you see it?
How has this war affected your lives?
Your political/social/economic/religious perspectives?
Should/How can this sort of disaster be prevented in the future?
At what point in this very unfortunate expedition should each of us ask
ourselves:
"Are my political views/actions consistent with my ethical beliefs?"?
I ask these questions sincerely hoping for many, diverse, enlightening
viewpoints with different foci from all Vision 2020 list readers. Perhaps many
of you who read but seldom post would consider writing a few lines (or more)
expressing your thoughts.
