OK, OK, I'm a little slow here because I'm still stuck on all-time =
favorite
songs. This really is just too difficult for me because as soon as I
thought I had one, I'd remember something else, and so it goes.
=20
However, after seeing Ms. Mix's additions (I cannot *believe* someone
besides me would have Holy, Holy, Holy!), and seeing that Ms. Huskey has =
now
raised the ante, I'm going to toss a few other of my all-time fav songs =
into
the mix. In addition to Holy, Holy, Holy, I'd have to add Amazing Grace =
by
anyone with a half-way decent voice . . . I get pleasant shivers just
thinking of it! Silent Legacy & All-American Girl by Melissa Ethridge. =
Ray
of Light by Madonna. Anything earlier U2, and Roxanne by The Police.
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Oh!!! American Pie by Don McLean
=20
And, I feel like a traitor for not mentioning anything by The =
Pretenders,
Joan Jett, CCR, The Rolling Stones, John Cougar Mellencamp, Bruce, Pink
Floyd, and . . . and . . . and
=20
<sigh> Obviously, I'm not very good as this game, and Rose, I don't =
know
that I'll be playing the film moments part -- I'd hate to tell you how =
long
I thought just to come up with just a few songs out of hundreds (maybe
thousands) of adored ones!
=20
However, for those who are able to come up with favorites (songs, entire
albums, movies, film moments), the odds are that when I read yours, I'll =
be
saying something like, "Oh! Excellent choice!" for at least one or two
things :-)

Movies
=20

1.=09

The Color Purple (the scene when Miss Shug first says to Cele that
she's beautiful -- a film of repentance, reconciliation, redemption =
unlike
any I've ever seen; a scene that conveys hope to someone utterly bereft)
2.=09

Broadcast News (when Albert Brooks tells Holly Hunter that Satan
won't ever announce who he is -- plus, as a journalist, what's not to
like??? Still, I don't think William Hurt is Satan . . . )
3.=09

Jesus Christ Superstar (not where I choose to get my doctrinal
teaching, but the scenes where Christ defends Mary of Magadala -- "she's
with me now" -- really resonates with this sinner and recipient of much
grace)

Belatedly, songs would have to include a hymn (Holy, Holy, Holy); a
bluegrass standard (Allison Krauss', Down to the River); and a pop =
fave-rave
from my misspent youth (anything by Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Cindy =
Lauper,
Chrissie Hynde or Blondie)
=20
Whew. Too much culture. Time to go watch something crass. I think =
"The
Practice" starts in 20 minutes . . .=20

Dear Visionaries:
=20
At the risk of sounding like a high school reporter for the school =
paper, I
had so much fun reading about everyone's favorite music - that I can't
resist asking about films. (Sorry, but it is my sense that it is one way =
of
making us individuals beyond the typed word.) Picking a favorite movie =
is
impossible for any of us that are film buffs (I am a total sucker for =
what
Joan and Melynda call the "costume drama" - think "The Lion in Winter" =
or
any David Lean film - but especially "Passage to India". And, I never =
get
tired of "A River Runs Through It", or "Steel Magnolias".=20
=20
Anyway, there are sequences in a movie, regardless of the overall merit =
of a
particular film, that are defining moments, either for the message they
send, the acting, or the technical achievement. (Good heavens, this =
sounds
like an Oscar nomination, and I'm no BIlly Crystal.) So my question is =
what
is/are your very favorite film moment(s)?
=20
My own all time, sends chills up my spine, makes me want to leap into =
action
and do the right thing no matter the odds, favorite film moment, occurs =
in
Casablanca, when Vicktor Lazlo leads the Free French in singing La
Marseillaise. For me, a light bulb went on and it made two lifelong =
points
for me: NEVER identify with the oppressor and one person with courage =
can
make a huge difference.
=20
Anxious to learn what you folks choose,
Rose Huskey
Once you lose integrity everything else is easy.
