[Vision2020] Important topic? Mariners

 TH,
First of all, Scott suggested that Edgar be used only as a PINCH HITTER, not a DH as you wrote.

Scott and everyone knows that Edgar has only been fit for a DH for many years due to those knees. What Scott was driving at was that his average is so off this year that having him in the lineup every day as a DH is no longer a good idea.

Also, putting in a pinch runner for a slow baserunner is only a good idea when it's in the late innings and the run that runnner represents is crucial.

   Why?
Because as you know, that if you pinch-run for a player, that player is out of the game--you lose his bat for the rest of the game.
You definitely don't want to lose a DH's bat early in the game.
So the turtle-crawl baserunning makes using Scott's idea of using Edgar only as a pinch hitter an even better idea.

On the Freddie trade thing, think of this scenario.
What would the M's have gained if they kept Freddie for the entire year and, as was very likely, he simply walked away as a free agent when the season was over.
The M's get nothing except a reliable starting pitcher for the rest of a season that one arm wouldn't be able to salvage.
  Nothing in return.
No good starting catcher, no prospects, nothing.

The management was in close contact with Garcia's agent and they knew what it would take to sign him to a new contract or an extension, and 9-10 million per season for three or four years wasn't something they thought they could afford.
Freddie's great this year, but let's face it, he has been up and down in the past.
So, a long term committment was far from a sure thing from a reliability standpoint.

Besides, Freddie apparently really wanted to go play for his buddy Ozzie Guillen in Chicago, and would have most likely opted for the Sox even if the M's had matched what they were talking to him about offering him in an extension.

Come on, Scott -

The Mariners trading Garcia was a good idea????? Maybe for the Athletics,
Angels, and Rangers. The man had one of the lowest ERAs in the league last
season. Ever since they traded Garcia, the Mariner's pitching has lost more
reliability than Christ Church's donations to city services.

It just now comes to you to use Edgar Martinez strictly as a DH? Gee, there is
a shocking idea. The man is older than dirt and slower than Christ Church's
check to the IRS. As long as Edgar makes it to first base (which is too often
for this old A's fan), you can put in a pinch runner.

What the Mariners need is some young stuff. Much longer and your Mariners are
going to need walkers to take the field.

I suggest that if the Mariners want to make it to the ALCS, they better buy
their tickets early. The fans at Oakland are already lining up.
