I also seem to remember Roy Atwood bitterly denouncing the idea that he d=
istance himself from Doug's goofy ideas about slavery as a form of "loyal=
ty oath" inimical to academic freedom. . . while he teaches at a "college=
" that requires a loyalty oath from every student, as well as every emplo=
yee. Guess that dog won't fight, either. =20
I won't take up the morally repulsive claim that disagreeing with Doug Wi=
lson in print is the intellectual equivalent of a pogrom (generally defin=
ed as "the organized massacre of a religious, ethnic, or linguistic minor=
ity"). I'll just note in passing that the Jewish children dismembered in=
the streets of the Ukraine and the Tutsi men and women hacked to death w=
ith machetes might take issue with Greg's vocabulary. Is this flourish a=
n example of a rhetoric adorned with truth and beauty? =20
My own sect of Christianity, Quakerism, has long been renowned for its de=
votion to plain speaking, and I hope I stand squarely in the Light when I=
say--for Christians, Jesus Christ is not a pretext. God is an End, not=
a means. If you want to create a world in which you can execute disobe=
dient children, end democracy, own some slaves, and burn some witches, fo=
r Heaven's sake, don't disgrace God by blaming it on the Trinity.
