Dear Visionaries:

In response to the UI's foolish and indefensible decision to close the UI
Press, I sent the following letter to incoming president, Tim White. His
emai is tim.white@orst.edu. I also sent slightly modified versions to Gary
Michael and Linda Morris, and I join Bob Greene in encouraging all of you to
do the same.

The UI Press made a quarter of a million dollars last year; the UI Athletic
Department lost four million.  This is not a matter of financial extremity;
it's a question of misplaced priorities. And that, I'm afraid, is becoming
a UI hallmark.

Dear Provost White:

I am writing to protest the closure of the University of Idaho Press. This
short-sighted move will hurt the university in reputation, in prestige, and
in academic standing. Please, I hope that you will urge outgoing president
Gary Michael to reconsider this poor decision, or, as incoming president, to
reverse it yourself.

Last year, the UI Press made a quarter of a million dollars. (The UI
Athletic Department, on the other hand, lost four million.) The press was
self-supporting and winning prizes for the quality of its published work.
In a year of bleak failures and low morale for the university as a whole,
the UI Press was a single, bright spot. Closing it will do irreparable
damage to an academic community whose reputation has already taken a
considerable beating.

I hope that you will look into this situation and do the right thing. Save
the UI Press.

Yours sincerely,

Joan Opyr
Community member and UI supporter
