So now the Rush Limbaughs and Sean Hannitys of the peculiar right wing
spectrum are pouncing all over a photo of John Kerry sitting a couple of
rows behind Jane Fonda at an anti-war rally in 1970. They're attacking
Kerry for a 34 year old photograph while, at the same time, dismiss
spotlighting George W. Bush's questionable National Guard duty as, in the
words of Scott McClelland, "trolling for trash." Bush supported the war,
but didn't hesitate to use influence to leapfrog ahead of several hundred
others to avoid actually having to go to Vietnam, instead serving, at his
leisure, stateside. John Kerry served in Vietnam, and made no secret upon
his return, of his opposition to that conflict. Bush's supporters are
evidently not above, to quote Max Cleland, another Vietnam veteran, using
"slime-and-defend strategy". One may get the impression that I don't
intend to vote for Mr. Bush in November.
