Tom,
I'm one of the "lurking silent group" out here and want to add my two =
cents without pissing off too many people. Idaho is a very conservative =
state caused IMHO by the strong presence of the Mormon Church. They are =
no less conservative than the Christ Church, Moscow group. They are the =
ones who set the morals in the state and control the purse strings in =
most things in Idaho.=20
There is no reason on God's green earth why there can't be a legal civil =
ceremony for gays that will give them the same rights of everyone else. =
I don't think it can ever be called "marriage" and have the majority of =
the people in the country accept that term. I would say that probably =
60-70% of the people in the country would be in favor of a change.
To shed some more light on what some refer to as the "Mormon Mafia" in =
Idaho we need to look no farther than the University of Idaho. Michaels =
and Pitcher are both Mormons. How much should we bet on the new =
president being a=20
Mormon?=20
If some well educated person from east of the Mississippi took a close =
look at the Idaho educational program for the K-12 system I think they =
would find signs of what I will refer to as the "Amish Syndrome". The =
Amish only educate to the 6th or 8th grade and don't want their students =
to become too "worldly" or they will leave the Amish faith because it =
will look so much better in the "English" world. I read someplace =
several years ago that the Mormons tend to lean toward keeping the =
blinders on their students so they won't get too worldly. Programs are =
conveniently not allowed in the system that encourages students to =
"think" for themselves.=20
I had a friend who was a superintendent of schools in Michigan. He =
retired early because he was continually having to fight the =
conservative religious right in them wanting to eliminate programs to =
encourage students to think. I had lunch with him a few years ago and =
couldn't believe what he was telling me about how this is happening all =
over.

Could somebody please explain to me exactly what damage would be caused =
if
same-sex marriages were recognized in Idaho?
How would peoples' daily lives be adversely and irrevocably changed?
I have heard on this forumseveral times that you cannot legislate =
morals.
Well, the Idaho state legislature says that htose people are wrong. You =
can
and (by their measure) must legislate to the point of amending the state
constitution.
Hey, Representative Trail. How about firing up the old Equal Rights
Amendment? Or is that a legislative "no no"?
