While we wait for the dust to settle on the allegations against John Kerry
that Tim has posted today, some thoughts from a liberal Democrat scoundrel
regarding a possible Ralph Nader candidacy. Another posting from Tim last
week put the spotlight on Kerry's pampered upbringing, and his evidently
huge ego. I would argue that a huge ego is an element, and perhaps a
necessary one, for any presidential candidate. I listened to Ralph Nader on
NPR last week as he contemplated another run in 2004. As far as I'm
concerned, the only motivating factor for Mr. Nader to decide to put himself
in the mix is an ego unmatched by anyone. He's perfectly aware that, just
as in 2000, he doesn't stand a chance, and, he's also perfectly aware that
what he CAN accomplish is help give the election to George Bush. Nader, on
the NPR interview, essentially said the Democrat and Republican parties are
virtually indistinguishable, and he would offer the only real alternative.
I wish to focus on one item. The environment, something the Bush
administration has shown a rather total disregard for. Did Mr. Bush even
mention it in his State of the Union address? Speaking strictly for myself,
if Ralph Nader's ego compels him to run again in 2004, risking the
possibility of handing environmental policy to another four years of
Bush/Cheney, a pox on him and his overly inflated sense of importance.
Again, this is strictly my own humble opinion, and any rebuttals should not
be aimed at all of us liberal tomcat scoundrels. Just this one.
