The kindest and most hospitable plan to emanate from Christ Church in months
comes, not surprisingly, from a woman. Although I recognize that the last
thing most of the ladies of Christ Church would want is me as their champion, I
thank Beverlee Atwood and the other women of Christ Church for being willing to
stand in the cold and offer warm drinks and gentle conversation to the
community. Biblically speaking, they illustrate why, following the Resurrection,
Christ did not appear to the male apostles first, but instead to the faithful
women who were neither faint of heart nor overbearing loud mouths. It is to the
shame and detriment of that male dominated faith community that the role of
women is left to baking cookies and trying to repair the damage done by their
chauvinistic leadership. I look forward to the day when the women of Christ
Church will claim a public voice, and be counted as fully adult, autonomous
members in their own right, and by extension our secular community.
Rose Huskey
