Fellow Compassionates,

As the human toll and potential for short and long term uncomprehendedly egregious human misery on a ghastly scale increases, let us not argue about whether or how stingy our country is.

Instead:

1. Please urge those that have a say and are responsible directly to us to make every effort to insure that our country's response to this horrific tragedy is effective and is at least proportionate to the magnitude of the disaster, our economic largess, and our ability to sacrifice and to contribute.

Here is where to start:

Butch Otter: http://www.house.gov/otter/email.htm
Larry Craig: http://craig.senate.gov/
Mike Crapo: http://crapo.senate.gov/

George Bush: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/

2. Please chose a relief organization that you know will use your dollars maximally and effectively to bring relief and contribute generously.

The victims of this disaster need material relief most -- food, shelter, clothing, infrastructure rebuilding, direct economic aid, etc.,

not bibles, religious tracts, and pushy people asking "Do you know Jesus?"

Many of us find helping the unfortunate satisfying in itself. Whether gratitude is shown by the recipients is not at all relevant. After all the disaster victims have and will be going through, only the very small minded would complain about not getting the proper thanks or any thanks at all. The recipients of our gifts and our concern face hardships of the magnitude that many of us cannot really comprehend.

For the more hard hearted: Failure of our country to make a generous, effective response to this titanic natural disaster may well have serious, very undesirable consequences for us in the future, particularly in the Moslem world. (Fill in the blanks yourself.)

> As we are arguing over how much we should give and how much our government should give, I have an interesting tidbit of info. A friend of mine is in town from DC. She mentioned that the GOP is spending more on the Innauguration events than it did in humanitarian aid to southeast Asia. (No I don't have sources to back up this statement, but I am sure they wouldn't be difficult to find. I have better things to do with my time, so feel free to look them up yourself.)
