[Vision2020] Feedback (or is it)

Before I say anything, I should jump up and down and claim that I'm as lefty as
anyone here (I'm guessing). *I* know what you mean by tolerance and *you*
know..you get the point.

That said, I think Dale has a point. There is in most minds a point at which
ideology clashes with practice. In that cozy head space of mine, I like to
think that the world has a place for all ideas and practices and the only
justification needed for something is that it exists. I call this my 'inner
anthropologist'--every expression of human potential is interesting and
therefore worth having. Pragmatically--and because, damn it, I can't seem to
shake a sense of ethics no matter how much I try to convince myself I'm a
nihilist--I'm fairly intolerant of ideas that I think are harmful. I will not
abide by people proselytysing my kids, I hate that people would deny others the
choice of who to partner with, I don't really care that America apparently
favors Bush; MY American embodies something entirely different that what he's
got on offer. From this perspective, I can't really see that Dale is wrong.
The Calvinists and I lack a fundamental common ground and our ideas really
cannot cohabitate harmoniously. We can't even agree on a similar lexicon such
that we can reliably use a word like 'tolerate' in conversation. So yes, from
his perspective I'm intolerant, and I think it would be fairly scary if most
lefties weren't.
