As the American war in Iraq continues down a spiral familiar to those
who lived the American war in Vietnam, it is time to revive some of the
relevant words from that era, including:
Hubris, the arrogance of power;
Quagmire, a worsening predicament or precarious situation; and
Bully, to intimidate in a cruel manner, especially against smaller
or weaker people.
I expect that we will hear these words more often now, as American
policy is radicalizing Islamic people all over the globe, isolating the
US from other nations, bankrupting even this huge economic power.
People around the world see that American leadership has stepped into a
quagmire. The American warmakers, filled with the hubris that blinds
them to alternatives, are destroying churches, leveling entire
neighborhoods, and encouraging vengeful suicide attacks. The Americans
may at one time been viewed as liberators, but now they are seen as
conquerers and bullies.
And it is only going to get worse if we continue on this path.
