Tom, Bill, et al,

This accomplishment by UI chemical engineering students not only reflects very
well on the students involved but upon the abilities and personalities of the
faculty who are able to teach, inspire, and motivate the students under less
than ideal conditions.

As a former teacher in Ethiopia and for a short time in a Watts high school, it
is heartening to see what even the most impoverished students can accomplish
with very little resources except hard work and hard working, skillful,
motivating, always open to new and productive methods teachers.

It would be nice to provide university students all the amenities, but when they
are not provided it is encouraging to see such significant accomplishments
spring from desire and ingenuity as exhibited by the UI chemical engineering
students and faculty.

However, such accomplishments should not deter us from urging the legislature to
more fully fund all public education or deter us from gifting the university and
other institutions of learning. Such accomplishments should not also deter us
from criticisms, comments, and suggestions designed to spark discussion on how
the educational system can be improved.

| Tom,
|
| I apologize if you misunderstood my comment. I admire the students'
| approach and the use of the economical materials. I just wish University
| of Idaho administration could learn from the methodology.
|
| As a graduate of the Idaho ChemE department ('83 and '89) I serve on the
| Advisory Board for the Chemical Engineering department and reviewed the
| student presentations last Friday. In addition I am involved with
| departmental fund raising (to try to make up for reduced budgets that
| are a result of chronic overspending by the university). This is what
| concerned alumni do. Now that I've answered your question - it's your
| turn. What has your contribution been lately?
