UI Restructures Diversity Administration
To Devote More Dollars to Programming

MOSCOW – In an effort to devote more money to diversity programming than to
diversity administration, the University of Idaho will close the Office of
Diversity and Human Rights and reallocate funding for that office to other
diversity-related offices on campus.

The ODHR director and management assistant will be reassigned to other
university departments.

“The university’s commitment to diversity continues to be strong, and a
priority is university-wide implementation of the diversity and human rights
plan,” said Interim President Gary Michael. “This restructuring puts more
discretionary funds in the hands of the people on the front lines providing
oversight and programming that positively impacts the entire university
community.”

Approximately $100,000 will be reallocated to other diversity offices and
functions, primarily the Office for Multicultural Affairs and the UI Women’s
Center. The Ad Hoc Presidential Campus-wide Diversity Programming Committee, a
group comprised of faculty, staff, students and administrators who were
responsible for this year’s slate of Black History Month activities, will help
decide how best to distribute the remaining funds for academic and other
diversity programming.

The human rights compliance officer will continue to report directly to the
president. Her responsibilities include providing guidance and training to UI
students, employees and others, as well as investigating discrimination and
harassment complaints. The ad hoc committee also will continue to report
directly to the president on programming issues in the areas of diversity and
human rights.

> Apparently the best way to respect diversity and promote it to make sure you
get rid of it.
