Mr. Douglas,

This link provides some background on the vulnerabilities of various =
regions to climate change.

http://www.gcrio.org/OnLnDoc/pdf/region_spm.pdf

I am not a climate scientist myself, but I am involved in several =
projects on which I collaborate closely with climate scientists, those =
whom I work with think this report is very conservative (in a scientific =
sense) and that the more likely impacts will be more severe.

  Re: Global warming:

If the climate continues warmer in the northern hemisphere, Greenland =
might become somewhat inhabitable and the Scandinavian countries may =
have a richer growing climate than they do......which was the case (in =
my understanding) in the centuries prior to the Reformation. I am very =
sure about the first implication and pretty sure about the second =
implication. =20

If our ancestors were as technologically advanced back then as we are =
now, would they have worried about global cooling?....which, come to =
think of it, was what we were worrying about prior to worrying about =
global warming. =20

Can anyone tell me with data the reason why this instance of global =
warming (if it is indeed the case) is qualitatively or quantitatively =
different than previous cycles?

  I don't mean to imply that climate warming/cooling don't have =
consequences. It meant the end of colonization of Greenland and most =
likely migrations/population cutbacks (very slowly) over the course of =
decades/centuries. But except for the population scale, how is our =
situation different than the past?

  Cheers,
  r
