Actually, Joan & Melynda, I think this is a pretty cool game. Take words =
and make up new definitions; accuse people of believing goofy things; =
pull silly stuff out of a hat. What puzzles me is why you get so =
incensed when other people do what you think is the same thing. So what =
if my view of the ante-bellum South and marriage are different than =
yours? Can't we all follow our own paths to enlightenment without =
everybody jumping on our cases? Can't I have it my way and be immune =
from criticism, just like you? Isn't that what this great big global =
village is all about?

You know what married means, Greg. By your definition, it's an =
institution in which I tell Melynda what to do, and she hops right to it =
because she's my covenant wife. The God-less state, of course, had =
nothing to do with our nuptials. We skipped city hall and took the =
A-Train straight to God. She told us we were wed -- and she said to =
share that good news with you.

  Melynda's spouse, borrowing Melynda's email, with Melynda's =
permission,

  Joan Opyr

PS: Just kidding about telling Melynda what to do. I wouldn't dare. =
That's what makes ours a *happy* marriage.

At the risk of being labled a homophobic hatemonger and of Miss =
Huskey not liking me anymore, where do you get this "married" stuff?

      Dear Jeremy:

I am myself descended from slaveowners--Pennsylvania Quaker =
slaveowners, I say with sorrow and regret. I am married to a descendant =
of North Carolina slave owners. Using your argument, nothing I say can =
be construed as revealing a bias against slave owners, since I have a =
fondness for both myself and for Joan. Do you see the difficulty now?

It was Doug Wilson, in the Daily News, who asserted that the =
purpose of his tract was to defend slavery as a Biblical institution. =
If that's not true, and his purpose was to right an historical wrong, I =
have to ask again, what kind of person looks at the institution of =
slavery in the U.S. and says to himself, "You know, those slave owners =
got a bad rap. Everybody feels sorry for the slaves, sure--but who's =
speaking up on behalf of those fine traffickers in human beings, the =
owners?" =20

The modern historical establishment regularly re-engages the =
question of slavery--witness the brouhaha over *Time on the Cross.* =
Don't fool yourself that the Wilson/Wilkins tract is part of any serious =
research on the subject, though. It's on a par with the work of David =
Irving.

      Melynda Huskey
