As I interpret the on-going discussion about what businesses should or =
shouldn't be permitted in the RTO zone, some have expressed concern that =
the intent of tonights discussion is to further liberalize the code. It =
occurred to me that it would be helpful to know what our neighbors are =
doing. I've spent the last few minutes touring the City of Pullman's =
website. The main address is: http://www.ci.pullman.wa.us/ From there =
you want to click on City Code, answer yes and you will go to a screen =
entitled City Code. If you click on zoning you will be taken to a page =
entitled use chart. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you =
will see titles for the various use charts. If you click on the various =
items you will be taken to charts that show what uses are permissible =
and others that require special approval. My conclusion- our code is far =
more restrictive than Pullman. I further understand the same is true of =
Lewiston. For example, offices are included without limitation. Medical =
and health services are allowed. Barbershops, laundries and laundromats =
are conditional uses. Convenience stores and eating establishments are =
allowed based on the same standard- one per 200 SF net floor area. =
Furniture and fixture manufacturing is allowed. I could go on.
Having participated in the earlier P & Z meeting, it is my observation =
and opinion that the intent tonight is to clean up and clarify language, =
not further liberalize the code as some have contended. One example we =
have discussed is the incidental retail that some technology businesses =
may have.
