[Vision2020] Counselors Within the MSD

Yes I believe that each elem school has a councilor, the JH & HS have at
least two each.  Also, the school nurse is a certified teacher, as are
the librarians.  It should be noted that when the state pays for a 20/1
ratio, the nurse, councilors, librarians do not count.  So if you have
100 students, the state pays for five teachers.  If you have a nurse,
librarian, or councilor, then you need to find the funds somewhere else,
either by local taxes, or increasing class size beyond 20/1.  the same
with Special Ed teachers.
This is a much simplified response, as the process is often complicated
by contract negotiations.

Question 1:  Does the Moscow School District employ counselors at each

the grade school, junior high school, and high school levels?  I assume

do.  This leads to my second question.

Question 2:  Are these counselor positions held by certified teachers?
If
so, this would count against the teacher/student ratio (as it applies to
classroom instruction).  If not, what are the qualifications of these
counselors?

To some people on this listserve, student counselling may be looked at
as an
insignificant additional duty of a teacher.  I am certain that the
staff,
faculty, and parents at Columbine High School in Colorado would
disagree.
It is my opinion, these counselors should not be assigned classes to
instruct, thus allowing easier access to these counselors by the
students.

Any thoughts?
