[Vision2020] What can we do?

Visionaries,
Clearly, "throwing money" at schools is not going to make children read better. I don't think that anyone would argue with the fact that the Moscow School District does not have enough money to hire the necessary number of teachers (particularly to help those children who have fallen behind) or to provide much need resources (such as the Moscow Mentor Program). So, yes, more funds do need to be allocated for education in Idaho. Much more obviously needs to be done. What can we do? Instead of attacking each other, let's work together to search for solutions.
Sincerely,
Jessica Lipschultz

Subject: [Vision2020] UI Takes First Step Toward 'Laptop' Campus
Greetings Visionaires -
According to some earlier posts that I have read here, some of you are
misinformed concerning laptop computers that the UI College of Business and
Economics (CBE) is providing in conjunction with its Integrated Business
Curriculum (IBC).
As stated in this morning's Spokesman Review:
"The ThinkPads include DVD/CD drives and come loaded with business-oriented
software."
I am certain that the CBE faculty determined specifically what software was
installed on these laptop computers. Having graduated from CBE I can
guarantee you that their decisions were not based on "their cut of the sales
revenue", but which software applications would be most beneficial to the
user after graduation.
The Spokesman Review Article goes on to say:
"The package provides insurance for the computers and maintenance on campus.
In return, students pay a course fee of $500 each semester and are allowed
to purchase the computer for $1 at the end of the two-year contract."
Paying $2,001 over a two-year period for a wireless laptop computer that is
fully loaded with state of the market business software sounds nice to me.
The computer alone is worth more than that. Coupling that with the in-class
instruction over that same two-year period ames this a win-win situation.
If you feel that this concept is new, will not catch on, and will only
become an unnecessary expense to the student, the Spokesman Review also
states:
"Jack Morris, associate dean of business and economics, said those planners
(school planners) visited other schools with mandatory laptop programs such
as Northern Michigan University and Albertson College in Caldwell to guage
the results. They found improved learning and technological skills."
Makes me proud to be a Vandal.

Dear Visionaries,
Thanks for the info on computers. I am still wondering if the College of
Business and not the Bookstore is the vendor. What percentage of the $2000.00
stays in the College of Business as their profit for "handling expenses"?
This is clearly a powerful laptop - I suspect there must also be some
powerful department perks that go along with it....once again at the expense
of the student.

Mr. Arnold, et at.,
In your e-mail, you present a false dilemma. Raise money for education
or you are selfish and lazy. You assume that Mr. Courtney's desire is
to hurt the children of Idaho. How if it is another way? What if Mr.
Courtney believes that the current system is hurting the children of
Idaho, and something else needs to be done about it? How if he has come
up with another way to become active in helping educate and teach, a way
that does not use methods that have failed time and again? What if he
proposes to become actively involved in teaching a specific child to
read, not just being content that feeding money into a failed system
will perform miracles? What if Mr. Courtney is, instead of being
demon-worshiping selfish and lazy, determined to find better ways to
truly help children? Would you listen to him and find out? Or do you
not know that there is wealth that is not money?

Visioneers,
Thinking that if we strip our schools of teachers won't effect the
quality
of the education a child is receiving is just fooling oneself so they
can
sleep at night instead of realizing that they are screwing children out
of
an education that the generation before them worked and slaved over to
give
them when they were children in the public school system.
Would it not be great if people thought, "How can I selflessly help my
community" Rather then "How can I come up a with a graph, chart, or
statistic I can use to justify my lack of sacrificing for others and
spend
more time, energy, and wealth, on myself"

Having done alot of computer "window shopping" over the years, I venture to
say that a comparable computer (loaded with similar software) would cost
considerably more at the UI Bookstore. The "Computer Store" at the UI
Bookstore, in my opinion, is over-priced. My recommendation is to purchase
hardware directly from the manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc.). As far as
software is concerned, I highly recommend Cactus Computer on Main Street.
The UI Bookstore cannot compete with Cactus' student sales/savings.
Once in a great while a deal such as the one offered by CBE comes along that
is an honest attempt at providing another resource to its students.
I agree with you, Ms. Huskey, that the student does have the option of
either registering with the CBE into this IBC 2-year program (with its
$500/semester additional fee) or purchasing a comparable lcomputer at a
higher cost from the bookstore. The student can either spend the $2,000
over the next two years and contribute to the CBE in the process or pay the
higher price and contribute to the bookstore.
At times like this when the university is undergoing major budget cuts, the
CBE designs a program that is a win-win situation for both the student and
the college.

One simple lquestion:
How are scholarships that are awarded to non-Idaho residents "hurting the
children of
Idaho"? Please provide more than "because I say so".
Limiting scholarships only to Idaho residents is narrow-minded beyond
belief.
