Your report and my memory, after watching way too much war TV, did not say 
the U.S. government announced any such thing, just that it was reported by 
someone.  I contend the MEDIA did it; again, jumping the gun to get, they 
believe, advantage over their competition.

One thing the U.S. government has been careful not to do, which I believe 
they should, is announce the death of Saddam and let him prove them wrong; if 
he can.
