Doug suggests that Islam "has been declared the Religion of Peace," and
consequently the military police are bedwetters, a highly capitalized
political correctness gags the people, and crimes passionels run unchecked
through our nation.
Am I missing something? The word "Islam" means "peace" in Arabic: I guess
that constitutes a declaration--a perfectly reasonable one. I don't know
about the eneuresis, but I suspect the m.p.s feel empowered to investigate
the crime fairly thoroughly--even unto the potential motivation to be found
in the soldier's religion.
I think the point which remains to be made is that people in every religion
do things which contradict the principles to which they supposedly cling.
If a member of a Christian church runs an illegal casino in his garage and
serves liquor to minors while doing so, I hope Buddhist onlookers won't
conclude that the scofflaw exploitation of others characterizes followers of
Christ. Likewise this tragic incident (which is not without precedent, as
in the "fragging" of officers in the Viet Nam war) need not reflect on
Islam, but only on the tragic consequences of war, which extend outward in
every direction carrying pain and suffering.

"We utterly deny all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward
weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatsoever: this is our
testimony to the whole world."
Quaker Declaration of 1660
