Nikolai Gogol's 1834 classic satire is probably the greatest comedy ever
written for the Russian stage.
It is the story of human vanity and depicts a penniless nobody from Moscow,
Russia, who is mistaken for a government inspector by the corrupt and
self-seeking officials of a small town in Russia. The object of satire is
Russian bureaucracy of the time under the Tsar; the indirect object of
satire is a range of attitudes of mind, and patterns of behavior which
continue to be widespread today. The unscrupulous business man, the
mischief and intrigue-maker all have their correlates in Gogol's play. Gogol
said that: everyone will find something of him or herself in Hlestakov, the
penniless copying clerk, and the other characters within the play.
This wickedly funny satire makes us laugh because, as the Mayor of the small
town insists, we are "laughing at ourselves".
