Phil,

I've been looking at this. One of the problems is that each state has a
different way of gathering taxes: state income tax, property tax, sales tax,
etc. And then these are subdivided. And each is weighted differently (some
with no state income tax, etc).

Here is the data from the Census Bureau for 2002 for some western states:

*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0213idstax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0248wastax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0238orstax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0227mtstax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0229nvstax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0245utstax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0251wystax.html
*

	http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/0205castax.html

In order to compare apples-to-apples, we cannot just compare property taxes
from one state to another.

Also, oddly, the Census Bureau reports that Idaho property taxes are N/A. Go
figure!

Best,
Dale

Dale - don't just look at Idaho. Compare our rates with all the western
states. Oregon is 1%. California runs 1-1 1/2 percent depending on county.
Look at our neighbor, Washington. Look at our neighbors, Montana, Utah,
Nevada...........etc. Talk about taking it in the shorts.

I don't know if you saw my other posts but one of our elected officials said
we should view it as a privilege because we have the University in our town
and the University owns 25-30% of all the land in Moscow. I don't know about
you but I do not think it is a "privilege" to pay more taxes than everyone
else in this state. A lot of this problem probably would dicipate (sp) if
they would do our census right. You know they count all 13,000 students as
local residents. Anyone with an IQ of 2 knows that they are not here all
year. They are here 6 1/2 months of the year. Period! Take a look this
weekend. You will see. I am not even open this weekend, or next, or the
next. Why? 13,000 of our local residents don't live here anymore. Guess
what? Same thing happens every 3 day holiday and summer. Granted a thousand
or two might (?) hang around. But that is it.

Again, is there any politicians out there that understand these views? I
think the burden of having the University or as the politician says, "the
privilege" should not be the sole burden of the community for which it is
housed. The students come from within the entire state and beyond. The taxes
should be equitable.

Phil
