Dick,

You need to get out of your cloistered little liberal world and do some
reading.

First, the Libertarians use the term "government schools" exclusively.
Google around for the term Libertarian and Government Schools
(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en
overnment+school*%22>
&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Libertarian+%22government+school*%22). See what you
get.

Second, are you implying that all Libertarians are bubba-rednecks? I would
hope not.

Third, the term "government schools" is used in other countries -- Australia
for instance, as a synonym for public schools
(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en
hool*%22+%22public+school*%22+site%3Aau>
&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22government+school*%22+%22public+school*%22+site%
3Aau).

Third, naming a thing correctly is important. We have this muddled thinking
that the American school system is "public" like a City Park or the public
highways. Milton Friedman, recipient of the 1976 Nobel Prize for Economic
Science, writes:

"The term 'public schools' gives a fatally false impression of what is
really going on. 'Public schools' are not public in the sense of being
something you can use without cost. You pay for them in taxes, and they are
very expensive. Nor are 'public schools' controlled by the public in any
very meaningful way. they are locked away in a tower of government
regulations--heavily guarded by teacher union patrols...'Public' does not
sufficiently define the character of the schools." He continues: "public
utilities [such as power companies] are private entities. If the word public
were used consistently, Catholic schools would be referred to as 'public'
--everybody recognizes that churches are public [i.e. open to the public]
institutions. The so-called public schools are in fact government entities.
'Governement' describes them, 'public' confuses."

Or perhaps Milton Friedman is also a bubba-redneck? Or is anyone who
disagrees with your "solution" to education a bubba? Or perhaps Thomas
Sowell and Walter Williams are also redneck-bubbas for using the term
"government schools"?

See Friedman's website The Best Possible Education (
<http://www.friedmanfoundation.org/> http://www.friedmanfoundation.org/).
I'm all for a broad, open education -- bring it on! But that doesn't mean
that it has to be a government-run education. That, in and of itself, proves
that it cannot be broad and open.

The INKster stated in a column earlier this year to say that those who are
not for "public education" are not for education. That's incorrect. Those
who are not for "public" education are not for government-run education.
There's a big difference in saying that if someone isn't for government
education then they are not for education.

Best,
Dale

We hear your people (Logos/CC) making comments about "government schools"
which is a bubba redneck phrase. Dale is the biggest public school basher in
town and there are those of us out here, the majority, who feel that the
public school gives the kind of broad open education our kids need.
