"Slaves No More: Three Essays on Emancipation and the Civil War," by Ira
Berlin, Barbara J. Fields, Joseph P. Reidy, and Leslie S. Rowland,
published by Cambridge University Press in 1992. It is available at
Barnes & Noble online www.bn.com. 

Ira Berlin has published a whole series of books, each of them a gem. 

Another great book is "Been in the Storm So Long" by Leon F. Litwack. It
is in paperback, Vintage Press. 

He has also done a series of excellent books.
