[Vision2020] Digital television

Don't confuse a digital signal with HDTV. Although HDTV is digital, a
standard resolution picture can also be digital, which is what many stations
will be moving to first. These standard resolution converters should be
relatively inexpensive. Cable boxes and satelite boxes are already doing
this conversion for many people. Only if you want over-the-air broadcasts
would you need an additional box.

Okay, here's a new topic. Yesterday's Spokesman had an article about all
television stations switching to digital broadcast by January 2007. This
move will force television set owners to either buy a HDTV by that date, or,
if they have an analog set with AV outputs, buy a convertor to switch the
signal from digital back to analog. Granted, the prices will go down over
the next few years, but right now the average price of a HDTV is, what,
about 600 dollars? For a lower end set? And the convertors are a few
hundred dollars, also. Does anyone else find this a little unsettling? I
just bought a brand new 27 inch set a couple of years ago. Is this going to
create a vast TV burial ground?
