Jason Mills has an above ground cistern constructed of olive barrels
on the corner of A street and Lincoln. Its a Yellow house with =20
a small garage in the back. The system collects rainwater off the roof
of the garage and down into two olive barrels. The two barrels weren't
enough storage as it overflowed during a couple of rains.

'Downspout diverters' may be used to fill a rain barrel. I'm going to put
one in using a 'fragrant' olive barrel from TriState. If that works well =
I
will probably gang several barrels together for plant watering and therma=
l
mass in a future backyard greenhouse. For front-of-house use I'd like to =
use
a whiskey barrel like those sold at Stookey's
Enviro Energy sells a 150 gallon above ground rainbarrel
(http://www.enviroenergy.com/rainbarrel.htm) and there are some neat look=
ing
ones at http://www.composters.com/docs/rainbarrels.html.
Real Goods lists some books on the subject:

I was wondering if there was some way to channel that [rain]water into an
above gound cistern for use for watering flower and vegtable gardens and
washing the car and such like stuff?
