Hi Parents,

There are two big dates for MJHS families to remember in January.

The first is January 29th: That's the date of our school Parent Night.
We'll start with a free dinner for families, beginning at 6:00, with a
program to follow at 7:00. We'll start with a presentation on teen
development and healthy choices, followed by a panel discussion featuring
MJHS students. Last year we had a similar panel discussion; it was a great
opportunity for kids to speak out and parents and family members to learn.
We hope to take the things we learned at last year's discussion and make
this one even better.

The program is designed to reach MJHS students as well as their parents, so
we hope you'll bring your kids along. We will also have child care and
activities available for younger kids (who are very welcome to come to
dinner). We would also encourage you to invite families with middle
school-aged children from outside of MJHS, and also sixth grader families.
Our students will be given an incentive to bring as many families to the
Parent Night as possible: the class responsible for bringing the largest
number of families to parent night will get a special prize to be announced
very soon. We also hope to have a valuable door prize to offer as an
incentive to our parents as well.

While you don't have to RSVP to come to parent night, it would help us in
our planning for dinner to have a rough idea of the size of the gathering.
If you are planning to come, please reply to this email with a number of the
adults and children you expect to bring. Don't worry about making a
commitment; we understand plans changed (and we'd be happy if you'd bring
more guests). (Just don't hit "reply to all"; that would send your response
out to the entire list serve).

We'll provide more information about parent night soon. We are excited
about putting together a family-supporting, community building evening: the
night will be even better if many of our families attend.

The second big event of interest to our families is the Open House for
Eldene Gatlin January 22d. Eldene is retiring after many years as a school
secretary and teacher at Lena Whitmore Elementary. If Eldene has made a
difference for your family, we encourage you to attend the Open House in her
honor on January 22, 2009 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. in the Lena Whitmore
Gymnasium.

Thanks and take care,

Peggy Jenkins
