Dear Parents,

Here are some more opportunities for you to make a difference at MJHS.

1. Help at the Mock Election!

Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help with the MJHS Mock
Election on Wednesday, October 22. I still need one more volunteer for each
shift.

8:15 - 10:30

10:30 - 12:30

   12:30 - 3:00 or 3:30

If you are available during any of these shifts, please consider helping
with this very worthwhile event. Information about the Mock Election
appears below. Please email Wendy Bolles at wsb at moscow.com if you are
interested in helping with the Mock Elections.

2. Help Facilitate the "i2i" Program!

Our ninth graders will be participating in a one-day program, entitled
"i2i," which is intended to encourage communication between kids and
families to build safe, healthy and substance-free communities. The program
will be held on October 30, 2008, when the Ninth Graders are the only
students attending school. "i2i" is described as "a peer-to-peer structured
workshop building the protective factors of school bonding and promoting
healthy beliefs and clear standards of behavior relative to alcohol and drug
use."

The program also envisions a follow up evening sessions, where kids and
community members will "participate in a dramatically effective
question-and-answer session whereby teens have an opportunity to speak
candidly about the stressors and challenges they face and adults can share
"a-ha" moments of raising teens.

There is an opportunity for 10 to 12 interested parents to participate in
the i2i program with the students on October 30. Parents would need to be
willing to commit to being there (MJHS Field house) from 8:30-3:00 and to
participate in the activities and discussions on an "equal level" with the
students. If you are interested in attending, please contact
peggy at jenkinsresearch.com. You don't have to be a ninth grade parent to
participate.

3. Volunteer to Help Implement the Second Step anti-violence curriculum at
MJHS!

Second Step is a nationally recognized, evidence-based violence prevention
curriculum. It is designed to foster social-emotional competence and help
schools create and maintain a healthy climate for interpersonal problem
solving. This training is designed for teachers or other school staff who
will be delivering Second Step lessons in the classroom, but it is
appropriate for parents and other community members who would like to learn
more about the program. Major areas emphasized in the Second Step K-8
curriculum are empathy training, emotion management, problem solving,
impulse control, anger management, bullying prevention (incluidng cyber
bullying and sexual harassment) and substance abuse prevention.

Choose ONE of the following dates:

Friday, November 14 or Wednesday, December 10

8:00 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m.

Trainings will be held at:

Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Moscow Office
