Dear Parents,
The minutes for the PST's May meeting, the final meeting of the school year,
are attached. One topic of interest was a presentation by counselor Charlie
Gerke about the Latah County Youth Advocacy Council. The LCYAC is a group
that serves youth and communities throughout Latah County. Its mission is
to promote "positive youth development opportunities" (kind of like our
mission as parents!). The LCYAC is always looking for parent and community
involvement, and they could use YOUR enthusiasm and ideas. If you'd like to
learn more check out their web site: http://www.latah.id.us/yac/; or call
their prevention coordinator, Gail Silkwood at 883-2268.
Have a wonderful summer!

League of Women Voters - Mock Election: Amy Ford and Susan Steele
The League will be running the October 22 election this year as opposed to
the school. They might need help from parents. the process tries to
duplicate how it happens with adults. Appropriate decorum is expected from
the students. Will try to have electronic ballots. They are negotiating
with Susan Peterson, the County Clerk, about bringing in actual booths.
There might be a possibility of bringing 9th graders to the fairgrounds
along with the high school. Results will not be available until October 24.
Sue Hovey is the liaison.
Assistant Principal's Report - Kevin Hill - Regarding the Mock Election,
the school has usually used people within the junior high, so the need for
volunteers will be less. There is usually a separate ballot for school
issues.
Other topics: This week is Spirit Week. It is Twin's Day today. Teachers
and students will reverse dress. The Freshman Dance went well. The Teacher
Appreciation Ice Cream Social went smoothly and was enjoyed.
Report from School District Liaison: Lisa Morris - Dr. Donicht discussed
Direct Writing and Math assessments
Charlie Gerke- Talked about the Latah county Youth Advocacy Council, which
is a coalition of groups whose purpose is to pride prevention-related
activities. They have funds to support youth-related activities. Next
year, there will be a media campaign re: alcohol use. A couple of new
parents are needed on the Advisory Board.
Increasing parental involvement: the group brainstormed ways to get more
people involved: Tell friends about it, let 6th grade parents know, etc.
E-mail addresses will be collected from the 7th grade registration.
