Dear Parents,
This is the first of your regular "Letters From The Principal" that will
be placed on the MJHS website at:
http://www.sd281.k12.id.us/jrhigh/parent-info.htm
<http://www.sd281.k12.id.us/jrhigh/parent-info.htm> and is also
emailed through the MJHS Parent Support Team List serve. Updated
versions will be mailed frequently, and the intent is to provide
information that will help keep you informed about activities here at
school. In addition, the "Cub Communicator" with more specific
information is posted at the same link as this letter. It will also be
mailed to each MJHS student household in Mid-August.
School starts on Wednesday, August 27. Please see the Student Handbook
on the MJHS website for important startup information at:

Before school starts, on Thursday, August 21, a program will be held in
the MJHS Field House to provide some specific information to help new
students begin the school year successfully. Seventh grade students and
parents may come at 6:45pm to pick up their class schedule. (Schedules
will not be available for any eighth and ninth grade students until the
first day of school.) The program begins at 7:00 pm, and will end about
8:00 pm. At that time, students and parents will have a chance to walk
through the main building. This is an opportunity to see where classes
will be held and to locate the student's locker. The office will not be
open that evening for business transactions.
BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS & SUMMER HOURS -- Our office officially opens on
August 12 to begin scheduling new student registration appointments.
The week of August 18 is dedicated to Back-to-School business
transactions in the office and registration appointments with our
counselors. Additional hours are set aside for transactions on the
afternoons of August 25 and 26. Once school begins, students can
conduct business before school, after school and during their lunch
period.

STUDENT NUTRITION -- Please stress the importance of good nutrition
and appropriate eating habits with your teen. Eating a good breakfast
and lunch is paramount in helping students to be at their best. Snacks
and/or a sack lunch may be equally important for after school activities
as school lunches are not designed to carry students with after school
activities until dinner. While our cafeteria juice and milk machines
are available throughout the day, the candy and soft drink vending units
are only turned on after school from 3:00pm - 3:15pm.
Adolescent caffeine during the school day
High caffeine drinks (Red Bull, Jolt, Full Throttle, etc.) will be
strongly discouraged during the school day, and we may contact parents
of children who begin to consistently have this type of drink at school.
The effect of caffeine on children's moods and behavior has become a
concern in our school and other schools throughout the nation. In a
study done by the National Institute of Mental Health, 8- to
13-year-olds who regularly consumed high doses of caffeine were judged
to be more restless by teachers, and one-third were hyperactive enough
to meet the criteria for attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity
(ADHD).
A Stanford study of fifth- and sixth-graders deprived of daily caffeine
reported having symptoms including trouble thinking clearly, not feeling
energetic, and getting angry. These symptoms were even reported by
children who typically consumed 28 mg of caffeine a day. While
researching the issues of caffeine on our student's health, I found a
website that indicates the amount of caffeine present in selected food,
drinks, and medications. I hope you find it helpful. The address
follows: http://www.cspinet.org/new/cafchart.htm

We look forward to a great school year. Your support is critical to the
success of your child at MJHS. Communication with parents is a high
priority and I welcome your contact anytime. Thank you in advance for
your assistance and support.
Sincerely,
Dale Kleinert, Principal
Moscow Junior High School
