*MJHS PST Minutes for **October 4, 2005***

Susan Mahoney, our MJHS Support team representative for 2005-2006, led
our second support team meeting of the school year. Hillary Dilworth
recorded the minutes.

*_The following were in attendance: _*

Patsy Gregory, Sandy Gibson, Evan Holmes, Lisa Nelson, Marie Charles,
Hillary Dilworth, Rhonda Jafolla, Ellen Potratz, Erin McCall, Mary Jo
Van Gerpen, Lori Meier, Nancy Akin, Lisa Morris, Susan Mahoney, Julie
Hart, Dale Kleinert-Principal, Kevin Hill-Assistant Principal

Introductions were made, and the meeting agenda and October school
calendar were handed out to those in attendance.

*/_October 12^th , Family Night_/**- *was discussed. This was presented
as a time to meet school staff: Dale Kleinert, Kevin Hill, school
counselors and school secretaries. Erin McCall will try to get local
businesses to donate the ice cream, toppings and supplies. The amount
planned on was up to 100 in attendance. There was a suggestion that the
some of the 9^th grade ambassador students serve the families that
night. A competition was suggested between the grade levels, with some
type of prize being awarded to the class with the most parents in
attendance.

*/_Facilities Update_/*-Desiree Jacobson was to tour the MJHS @3:00pm on
10/07/05 with Dale Kleinert and Kevin Hill regarding school
improvements. She is a representative from the Junior High
Representative for Facilities Task Force (FTF). The FTF is looking into
the immediate short term needs for MJHS. Mr. Kleinert said that some of
the immediate needs at MJHS are energy efficient windows, new
heating/cooling system (the boiler is from 1960), and improved
electrical outlets (each room was only designed with 2 outlets). Mr.
Kleinert read the minutes from one of the meetings regarding the school
improvements, plant facility levee, short term repairs vs. Bond
measure-Long term building projects. The FTF is leaning toward an
Elementary level facilities bond, instead of short term fixes.

*_High school_**_ _**_Reform_*-Idaho Secondary School Reform Initiative.
A Governor's Task Force has recommended that more rigor and relevance be
added to our schools. Changes would include four years of high school
mathematics, three years of laboratory science, and a P.E. requirement,
along with increased junior high/middle school requirements. All course
requirements would be aligned with the Idaho State Standards. As Marilyn
Howard stated, we need to think "out of the box" in order to help all
children succeed. Four years of Mathematics, including Algebra II may
not be the best option for all students, and we will need to think of
creative ways to help all of our students succeed in a student centered
program. Opportunities for input are coming, and your input is critical.
The nearest hearing will be held in Lewiston on October 18^th at 6:30
p.m., at the LCSC Williams Conference Center. Mr. Kleinert wants parent
input on this subject, and it will be placed on the list serve email.
Written comments can be sent to: High School Redesign Proposals, PO Box
8370, Boise, ID 83720-0037, and must be received by October 26, 2005.

*/_School Calendar- _/*No school on October 5, 6 & 7^th .  On Monday
October 10^th the 7^th grade election process would begin and overseeing
it was Mr. Hill. On the 10^th & 11^th Photo retakes were taking place.
The ISAT was to be finished on 10/21^st . ^ School Board Meeting is on
10/25. Daylight savings time is 10/30-Remember to "FALL BACK".
Halloween, 10/31-The kids are welcome to dress up provided it doesn't
hinder their schooling.

*/_Assistant Principal's Report -_/* Mr. Hill passed out a brochure from
Premier, the company that made the Student Agendas. They are offering a
$5.00 donation to the school for every calendar bought from them. The
entire process is done on line. He will find out more details and
discuss it again at the November meeting.

*/_Financial Report -_/*Susan reported that the PST has almost $400 in
the account.

*/_Staff Appreciation-_/*Sandy Gibson and Lisa Nelson are planning on
providing a continental breakfast for the staff on Wednesday October
19^th . They will send a note out to parents asking for help with it.

*/_Student Directory-_/*There has been interest in producing a student
directory. Susan will look into the details with Mr. Kleinert and report
on it at the next meeting.

*/_PST name change- _/*There has been a suggestion that we change the
name of the parent group. Some parents have the mistaken impression that
Parent Support Team is for parents who need support, either with coping
with their struggling students, or in some other way. Some of the
suggestions made were: Parents With Input; Parent Involvement Team;
Parent Involvement Group. Parents With Input was the preferred choice,
as the other two have acronyms that we may not want to use.

/Addendum: This decision was tabled after the meeting for Principal
input at the November meeting./

*/_Next Meeting-_/*The next PST meeting will be Tuesday November 1^st ,
at 7:15AM in room 201.
