Dear Parents,=20
I can't believe that our 1st quarter is already over. I also am =
finding it hard to look out my office window at 4:30 p.m., and see that =
it is dark. With the speed at which this year has started, the winter =
will fly by, and we'll have beautiful spring days before we know it.
This letter will be a little shorter than usual, as most of the =
information you'll need will be coming next week with report cards and =
the Cub Communicator. We will mail report cards and ISAT information on =
Wednesday, or Thursday of next week. (11/9 or 10) If you'd like a =
preview of the Communicator, it will be posted on our website this =
weekend. www.sd281.k12.id.us
Over the years, I've seen some students arrive at school without eating =
breakfast. I have noted that students that don't eat are groggy, and =
they sometimes become sick just from the lack of energy needed to be =
successful. A recent article about Breakfast interested me, and I've =
included it in this letter. It comes from our school nutritionist, Mimi =
Pengilly.

Breakfast Really is "The Most Important Meal of the Day"
Researchers reviewed 47 studies to determine if there is any truth to =
the saying, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." The =
research review revealed that breakfast consumers are more likely to =
have better overall diet quality. Breakfast provides a number of =
nutrients essential to children's growth and development that were not =
provided at other meals throughout the day. For instance, a breakfast =
of cereal with milk provided more fiber and calcium than other meals. =
Although children who ate breakfast consumed more calories, they were =
less likely to be overweight than children who didn't eat breakfast. In =
addition, children who ate breakfast had better academic performance and =
school attendance and less tardiness. As for parents, the research =
showed that those who ate breakfast had children who ate breakfast, =
emphasizing the influence parents have on their children's eating =
behaviors. The authors advocate a healthful breakfast for all children =
consisting of high-fiber whole grains, fruit and dairy foods. =
Rampersaud, G et al. Breakfast habits, nutritional status, body weight =
and academic performance in children and adolescents. Journal of the =
American Dietetic Association. 2005; 105: 743-760.
Healthy Snack Suggestions: The Center for Science in the Public =
Interest, with input from experts and parents, has developed two new =
resources with healthy snack ideas for parents, teachers, after-school =
programs, and other caregivers. There is a one page version that can be =
used as a handout at =
http://www.cspinet.org/nutritionpolicy/snacks_summary.pdf. There is =
also a more extensive list of snack ideas for people and programs that =
want more detail at http://www.cspinet.org/healthysnacks.=20
Please continue to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,=20
