Good morning Committee members,

I hope you and your families are all safe in the aftermath of Irma. I know some of you are not able to return to your homes due to damage, and many more are still without power.

For those who are back to work and interested in in assisting the News Service of Florida, we received the trailing request from Tom Urban for one of our members to speak to the media, ideally via an on-camera interview in Tallahassee, about the rights and obligations of residential tenants and landlords regarding premises damaged by the storm.

I’ve copied Tom on this email, so please respond directly to Tom if you are able to assist.

Thank you,
Rick

Subject: Renter/landlord law interview

Good Morning Rick,

Thanks for talking to me real quick this AM. I'm looking to talk to someone, preferably on-camera in Tallahassee (but even info is ok, short of that) on issues regarding landlord/tenant leases following Hurricane Irma.

Whether it would be from flooding in Jacksonville, roof and home damage all over the state, or a unit being basically washed away in the case of the Keys, what are the rights and responsibilities of both landlord and tenant when a home is no longer livable, whether in the short or long term?

That's the questions I have for a story we're working on today. Again, looking for what the general law is in that area, knowing that some things can be handled case-by-case and between the parties.

Thanks,
Tom
