PBS series examines roadless issue in Idaho

Edition Date: 02/21/08

The weekly news journal series "Now On PBS" this week airs a close-up
look at Idaho's petition to assume management of forest lands that are
currently part of the federal roadless area rule.

The program airs at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Idaho Public Television.

A "Now On PBS" team traveled to southeastern Idaho recently to see how
Idahoans interpret the 2001 rule created by President Bill Clinton's
administration. The rule protects 6 million acres in Idaho from most
road-building, mining and logging. The policy affects Forest
Service-managed roadless lands outside formally designated wilderness
areas.

"Now On PBS" also talks with Mark Rey, undersecretary of natural
resources and environment for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Hearings are scheduled throughout Idaho on the future of these lands.
Hearings in Southwest Idaho begin Monday in Cascade.
