[WSBARP] Off topic California procedure question

Listmates, I have a California court procedure question. CA resident gets a weird " Judgement?" modifying her divorce decree. Client hires a CA attorney to bring a motion to set this modification aside for various reasons. CA attorney cannot locate ex wife to get personal service ( even hired a detective). CA attorney is telling client that this motion requires personal service and no alternative exists. I have suggested a motion for service by mail or publication and he tells me that does not exist or apply and only personal service will work. This does not sound rational to me. Any thoughts? FYI, other things this attorney has done bring his competency into question. Thanks, Craig
