[WSBARP] Practice "Sweet Spots" and Client Referral

Dear All:

A real estate agent recently referred potential client to me. PC had just purchased a house but is now finding that there were numerous misrepresentations as to the condition of the house (PC used the phrase "a nightmare – a DIY torture chamber of renovation"). Although this scenario does fall under the umbrella of real estate, I would be happy to have a list of those of you who take delight in successfully helping clients who have faced this same situation and who are willing to connect with this potential client.

Please pardon the length of the rest of this email, but I think it could be the start of a useful discussion. Some of us are at the point in our careers where we can now identify our "sweet spot" in the practice of law, which I define as follows (some of you may have more criteria):

What are you good at?
What do you like doing?
What brings you sufficient income to allow you to live your life in the matter to which you become accustomed? (I think this language came from brief encounters with family law)

I started out in maritime law and then transitioned to a more general practice. As time progressed, however, I found myself focusing more and more on issues related to real estate. Even within the catchall of real property, there are "subspecialties" (forgive me – I know we’re not supposed to use most any form of the word "specialty"). For me, that would be helping clients with issues involving titles to real property. That is my sweet spot.

For any specific practice areas outside of (or on the outer edges of) my sweet spot, I like to refer work to other professionals who focus on those practice areas more than I do. In that light, it would be helpful for me (and perhaps for others on this Listserv) to have a list of "go to" people to whom I can refer potential clients when they come to me for help.

To help develop this list, please share what you consider to be your "sweet spot" in the practice of law. Also, for any other real property matters, please let us know who you consider to be your "go to" attorney(s).

Thanks.
