Maybe the pleasant-sounding tenant came from Oregon, where it is the law as of June and source of common confusion of how to "consider a source of income," without tripping into discrimination.

I'll defer to Seattle counsel on the requirements in King County.

Currently, statewide there is no requirement both under state or federal law that residential landlords accept a section 8 housing voucher.

Occasionally, this issue arises in the Legislature as the tenant lobby wants to force landlords to accept section 8 housing. The tenant lobby would like RCW 59.18 amended such that a residential landlord cannot discriminate on the basis of the source of the tenant’s income. Thus, whether the tenant is making great money working for Boeing or has a section 8 voucher – the landlord cannot discriminate.

Julie:
To my knowledge, I believe it was the City of Bellevue or maybe even Seattle that was trying to adopt this. I am not sure if it even passed. But to my knowledge, nothing has passed in our State legislature.

Subject: [WSBARP] New Law requiring Landlord to accept HUD?

I have a landlord who a person looking to rent a residence that claims if the landlord does not accept HUD vouchers that she can sue him for discrimination. I have never heard of this and the person claims that it is a new law. Is anyone aware of any reason that a landlord has to accept HUD vouchers if his property is not part of the HUD approved housing or program?

Sincerely
