I was presenting to a lovely group of seniors this afternoon and two
questions came up that from the audience that I said I would ask fellow
colleagues.
First, is there a special rule/exemption/recruitment benefit/etc where
member of the armed forces are allowed to have multiple ROTH IRA as well as
having a deposit limit that maxes for each account? Allegedly, this
person's nephew was told that he can have two ROTH IRA and have a combined
contribution limit of $14,000.
Second - for a 529 account, is there any publication/ruling/white paper
that talks about changing beneficiary if the money is not used for
educational purposes The audience member stated that he was advised that
you must have the SAME beneficiary for 15 years, as well as the 529 account
being 15 years old. I told him that I had never had that issue before but
that it doesn't make sense - if a named beneficiary dies that the next
beneficiary would have to wait 15 years if the 529 is already eligible for
distribution.
Thank you for any insights! I love talking to the public as they help me
see things I have never yet seen.
