Agree with Marsha. But Jim, just be extra cautious about who you hire. Some of the public adjusters can be less than ideal. Might want to check in with someone like Leah Snyder at Ember Law (either to see if she can advise or provide thoughts on which public adjusters are the best).

If they haven’t already done so, suggest they hire an insurance adjuster. They work for the owner, not the insurance company. They work on a % basis.

Colleagues:

I am working on an estate in which Decedent’s home was completely destroyed by fire. The Beneficiaries (surviving children) just received a payoff proposal from the homeowner’s insurance company.

I am definitely not an expert in determining the cost of rebuilding a home, but the proposal from the insurance company seems low.

I am hoping that someone out there has worked with an appraiser who has dealt with this situation. There is money available to pay for a review of the proposal, an additional appraisal if necessary, and negotiating with the insurance company’s adjuster, if needed. The property is located in Skagit County.

Thanks in advance.

Jim Dolan
