According to CPAs I have worked with, yes. Selling real estate (which is reported using the Estate EIN) generally means the PR needs to file an estate tax return. It does not, however, mean any taxes will be owed.

Subject: [WSBAPT] Estate Income Tax Filing
Greetings Wise Ones -

I am seeking confirmation.....due to recent communication from a couple clients.

Estate has one asset. A single family home with real property. That property is valued at $500,000. Estate PR sells property for $490,000 (darn interest rates).

Does the Estate have an obligation to file an Estate Income Tax Return because it converted an asset into cash to distribute to named beneficiaries?
